Marshall and Morton have been added to the sixteen team field for the 2007 Proviso West Holiday Tournament, which will be held December 26-29 at the newly refurbished Proviso West Sports Arena.
The Marshall Commandos -- which has placed third in the Class “AA” state tournament in each of the past two years -- will return four of their five starters, including three players who averaged more than 15 points per game last year. Marshall will be making their first ever appearance at the Proviso West Christmas classic.
Along with fellow Chicago Public League power Whitney Young, both Marshall and Young are expected to be a strong candidate for the pre-season number one team in the Chicagoland area for next year.
Returning back to the Proviso West Tournament is an original charter member in the Morton Mustangs. Morton, which has averaged 18 wins and won a regional title over the past four seasons, makes their first showing back on the Hillside hardwood since 1982, when the school had two separate athletic programs.
Morton West was in the original eight team field for the initial 1961 Proviso West Tournament and placed second that year before winning the event in 1962. Morton East and West participated a total of 26 times over the years, with the schools alternately participating from 1971 to 1982.
The two new additions replace Julian and Peoria Central who elected not to renew their contracts.
Holiday Tournament Director Mark Schneider remarks on this year's event and
gives a glimpse of some additional things to come, "We look forward to another
powerhouse field of teams for the 47th Annual Tournament and to the fans: Wait
until you see our updated facility."
The complete field for the 47th Annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament includes: Evanston, Fenwick, Glenbrook North, Hillcrest, Homewood-Flossmoor, Marshall, Morgan Park, Morton, New Trier, Proviso East, Proviso West, Saint Joseph, Saint Patrick, Thornton Fractional North, Von Steuben, Whitney Young.
