THREE GAME GUARANTEE AND |
Released: October 15, 2005
Two new innovations highlight the upcoming
Proviso West Holiday Tournament, which will be played in the Proviso West Sports
Arena, December 27 - 30.
For the first time since the tournament expanded to include a fifth place
bracket in 1984, a change in the tournament structure will take place, as all
teams will be guaranteed a minimum of three games. In previous years, teams
that lost in the opening round would play an elimination game the following day,
and four teams were out of the event before the halfway point of the tournament.
The two additional games in the consolation bracket have been added to final day competition. Recent State Champions Saint Joseph (2000-2001) and Glenbrook North (2004-2005) both participated in the Consolation bracket at Proviso West in the years they won the state title. In addition, Schaumburg won their state championship during the 2000-2001 season while playing in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament fifth place bracket earlier that same year.
“The depth of the Proviso West Tournament is one of its’ great drawing cards and the guarantee of a third game solidifies the participation of teams in the consolation bracket, said Tournament Executive Director Joe Spagnolo. “It’s definitely a coach-friendly decision on our part”.
In an unprecedented move, the tournament is also reducing the admission prices by twenty percent for its consolation and fifth place rounds during the final three days of the tournament.
“I do not believe there is any other entertainment venue that is going to offer more for less,” said Spagnolo. “We felt that this is in the best interest of the parents who come to watch a single game and for the die hard fans that religiously attend all of the morning and early afternoon sessions.”
Tickets for all non-championship bracket sessions will be priced at eight dollars and will feature four games each day.
